The story is, in all likelihood, largely fictionalized. His writings do not mention this fountain at all, and his expeditions had much more concrete objectives: gold, land, colonization, power.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Yet the fact that this legend has survived for so long says something very profound about us.<\/h4>\n<p>The idea that it exists somewhere <strong>A secret key to stopping aging is irresistible<\/strong>.<br \/>\nBecause we all know, instinctively, what it means to age. We see it in our skin, our hair, the decrease in strength, the memory that sometimes falters, the body that recovers more slowly.<\/p>\n<p>But for science to truly tackle a problem, it must first define it well.<\/p>\n<p>So the real question is: What, exactly, is aging?<\/p>\n<p>Aging doesn't just mean \u201clooking older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first image we associate with aging is often external: gray hair, wrinkles, less elastic skin, a different posture.<\/p>\n<p>But these are just the visible signs.<br \/>\nThere's much more going on beneath the surface.<\/p>\n<p>As time goes by, the body gradually loses efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Women lose fertility up until menopause.<br \/>\nBones become more brittle.<br \/>\nMuscles weaken.<br \/>\nThe recovery speed is decreasing.<br \/>\nHormones signal less well.<br \/>\nMitochondria\u2014the tiny organelles that produce ATP, our fuel for life\u2014become less efficient.<br \/>\nCells respond worse to stimuli.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other words: aging is primarily a progressive loss of function.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is not a disease in itself, but<\/strong>It is the breeding ground for nearly all major chronic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The true face of aging: damage accumulation and reduced repair<\/p>\n<p>From a biological perspective, aging can be viewed as the slow accumulation of cellular damage, coupled with a gradual decline in the body\u2019s ability to repair it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>That is the key point.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our body is not static.<br \/>\nEvery day it causes damage and every day it repairs it.<\/p>\n<p>Proteins that become damaged.<br \/>\nMitochondria becoming less efficient.<br \/>\nCell membranes oxidizing.<br \/>\nDNA undergoing small insults.<br \/>\nMetabolic waste products that accumulate.<\/p>\n<p>When we&#x27;re young, our bodies heal quickly, regenerate, adapt, and cleanse themselves.<br \/>\nOver time, this ability weakens.<\/p>\n<p>Not because the body suddenly stops working.<br \/>\nBut why is the balance between damage and repair slowly starting to shift in the wrong direction?.<\/p>\n<p>This is why aging isn't an event, but a process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Why do we age? An answer we don't like<\/h4>\n<p>Evolutionary biology is ruthless here.<\/p>\n<p>Evolution isn&#x27;t designed to make you live a long time.<br \/>\nIt is designed to ensure the survival and transmission of genes.<\/p>\n<p>If a gene causes death at age 10, it is quickly eliminated because the person is unable to reproduce.<br \/>\nIf it causes death at 30 years old, it still tends to be negatively selected.<br \/>\nBut if its effects manifest at 70 years old, after reproduction has already occurred, that gene can safely remain in the population.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, aging is profoundly natural.<\/p>\n<p>And precisely for this reason, fighting it means, in a sense, going beyond nature, not just \u201cfollowing the natural course of things.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nature isn't focused on your longevity.<br \/>\nIt aims for genetic continuity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chronological age cannot be reversed, but biological age can.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a fundamental distinction here.<\/p>\n<p>Chronological age (years on the calendar) is irreversible.<br \/>\nBut physiological or biological age is another thing entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Two 60-year-old people can have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>completely different energy<\/li>\n<li>different cardiovascular risk<\/li>\n<li>different bone density<\/li>\n<li>Muscle mass<\/li>\n<li>different mental clarity<\/li>\n<li>different inflammation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In other words: we don't all age at the same rate, and this opens a huge door, because if the rate of aging varies, then there are factors that accelerate it and factors that slow it down. From infections to age-related diseases.<\/p>\n<p>For much of human history, the main causes of death were infections: pneumonia, tuberculosis, gastrointestinal infections, influenza.<\/p>\n<p>Today, at least in industrialized countries, the situation has changed radically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The main causes of death are primarily:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cardiovascular diseases<\/li>\n<li>Cancer<\/li>\n<li>type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Alzheimer's and other dementias<\/li>\n<li>kidney disease<\/li>\n<li>Osteoporosis and fragility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>These pathologies have one thing in common: they grow with age.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Children almost never have heart attacks.<br \/>\nA twenty-year-old is unlikely to develop Alzheimer's.<br \/>\nTumors become much more common after the age of 50.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, targeting aging means targeting the common ground on which many chronic diseases develop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Inflammaging: The slow inflammation of aging<\/h4>\n<p>One of the most important concepts in modern aging biology is inflammaging.<\/p>\n<p>The term unites\u00a0<em>inflammation<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>aging<\/em>\u00a0and describes a characteristic phenomenon of old age:<br \/>\nA chronic low-grade, often silent, diffuse, persistent inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>It's not the acute inflammation of an infection or trauma, it's a slow burn.<\/p>\n<p>This condition is favored by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>accumulation of cell damage<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>oxidative stress<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>excess visceral adipose tissue<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>insulin resistance<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>sedentary lifestyle<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>poor sleep quality<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Modern hyper-processed diet<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This chronic inflammation wears down tissues, alters communication between cells, and sets the stage for many degenerative diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The key role of autophagy: internal maintenance<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>If there's one concept that has revolutionized the way we think about aging, it's autophagy.<\/h4>\n<p>Autophagy is a process by which the cell:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>recognizes damaged or old components<\/li>\n<li>takes them apart<\/li>\n<li>they recycle<\/li>\n<li>free up space and material to build new and more efficient components<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is, in essence, a quality control system.<\/p>\n<p>Just as a car needs to have its oil, filters, and worn-out parts changed, the cell also needs to continuously replace its components.<\/p>\n<p>When this system works well, the damage is contained.<br \/>\nWhen you slow down, damage accumulates.<\/p>\n<p>Autophagy is not a minor detail.<br \/>\nIt is one of the pillars of biological longevity.<\/p>\n<p>And the extraordinary point is that diet and lifestyle strongly influence this process.<\/p>\n<p>Nutrition: not just fuel, but a biological signal<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hippocrates had already understood that nutrition was a cornerstone of health.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today we know that food is not just energy or calories;
