Yes, but Not for the Reason You Think<\/h1>\n<p>In recent years, apple cider vinegar has become one of the most popular products in the world of wellness and metabolic health. Some take it in the morning, some before meals, and some consider it almost a miracle remedy for controlling blood sugar and promoting weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>But what does science really say?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The answer is interesting: the effect on lowering blood sugar really exists, but it doesn't depend on apples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The true protagonist: acetic acid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ingredient responsible for vinegar's metabolic benefits is acetic acid, a substance found in all fermented vinegars.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it's not the apple that makes the difference.<\/p>\n<p>White wine vinegar, red wine vinegar, rice vinegar, and apple cider vinegar produce very similar effects when they contain equivalent amounts of acetic acid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What do the studies show?<\/h2>\n<p>One of the first important studies was published in 2004 in the journal Diabetes Care by Johnston and response was also lower.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The effect followed the amount of acetic acid ingested, not the total volume of vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>The confirmation of the meta-analysis<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, a meta-analysis published in Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice collected data from available controlled studies.<\/p>\n<p>The authors concluded that taking vinegar during a meal significantly reduces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>postprandial blood glucose;<\/li>\n<li>the insulin response after a meal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When similar results are observed in different studies, the probability that the effect is real and clinically relevant increases.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How does vinegar work?<\/h2>\n<p>The mechanisms are now quite well understood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slow down gastric emptying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 1998 study by Liljeberg and Bj\u00f6rck demonstrated that vinegar slows the passage of food from the stomach to the intestine.<\/p>\n<p>This means that carbohydrates are absorbed more slowly, avoiding sudden blood sugar spikes.<\/p>\n<p>In practice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>glucose enters the bloodstream more gradually;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>insulin is secreted less intensely;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The glycemic curve is more stable.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reduces sugar digestion<\/p>\n<p>Acetate also appears to inhibit some intestinal enzymes involved in carbohydrate digestion.<\/p>\n<p>This also contributes to slowing down glucose absorption.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>And to lose weight?<\/h2>\n<p>Here the situation changes.<\/p>\n<p>Much online content attributes almost miraculous slimming properties to apple cider vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>The scientific literature, however, is much less convincing.<\/p>\n<p>A 2020 study evaluated the daily intake of red wine vinegar for eight weeks in people at risk for metabolic complications.<\/p>\n<p>The results showed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Improvement of fasting blood glucose;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved insulin sensitivity;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>but no significant variation of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>body weight;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>waist circumference;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>visceral fat.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, vinegar can help with glycemic control, but it is not an effective strategy for weight loss when used alone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How much to take?<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>study<\/strong> suggest that to achieve an effect on blood sugar, you need to take approximately:<\/p>\n<p>1-2 tablespoons liquid vinegar (15-30 ml)<\/p>\n<p>preferably before or during a meal containing carbohydrates.<\/p>\n<p>This quantity provides about <a href=\"tel:750-1500\">750-1500<\/a> mg of acetic acid.<\/p>\n<p>Watch out for gummy candies and tablets<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, numerous apple cider vinegar-based supplements have appeared on the market in the form of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>gummies;<\/li>\n<li>capsule;<\/li>\n<li>compress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, a 2022 study directly compared these products with liquid vinegar and observed that the tablets failed to reduce postprandial blood glucose to the same extent as traditional vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>This likely depends on the lower bioavailability of acetic acid or the actual doses taken.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The message to take home<\/h2>\n<p>The metabolic effect of vinegar is real and supported by scientific literature.<\/p>\n<p>But the protagonist is not the apple.<\/p>\n<p>It's not the \u201cmother\u201d of vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>It's not the brand.<\/p>\n<p>It is not the fermentation process.<\/p>\n<p>It's acetic acid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If used in the context of a diet <strong>rich in real food<\/strong> and with a <strong>adequate carbohydrate control<\/strong>, vinegar can represent a
