Menopause and surroundings, Hormones
An estrogen imbalance can manifest with symptoms of excess or deficiency of these hormones.
Symptoms of excess estrogen may include:
- Bloating and water retention
- Hemorrhagic menstruation or bleeding in postmenopause
- Rapid weight gain, especially on hips and buttocks
- Increased breast size or breast tension
- Uterine fibroids, endometriosis or painful menstruation
- Mood swings, premenstrual syndrome, depression, irritability, anxiety
Symptoms of low estrogen may include:
- Poor memory
- Emotional fragility
- Depression, anxiety and apathy
- Wrinkles
- Night sweats or hot flashes
- Difficulty sleeping and frequent awakenings
- Drooping breast or decrease in breast volume
- Joint pain
- Loss of bone mass
- Vaginal, ocular or oral dryness
- Low libido
In particular, during perimenopause, progesterone deficiency can occur with high estrogen levels, which can cause symptoms similar to those of estrogen excess.
Often, estrogen is present in excess of low levels. Many symptoms can be difficult to distinguish, as excess estrogen can suppress thyroid activity, causing fatigue and other symptoms that are often confused with symptoms of low estrogen levels. In addition, excess estrogen can reduce the quality and frequency of orgasms, and because it lowers testosterone levels, it can also decrease sexual desire.
